WHAT IS A MICROCHIP

What a Microchip Is

A microchip is a tiny radio-frequency identification (RFID) implant — about the size of a grain of rice — that stores a unique ID number.
It does not contain GPS or tracking capabilities. Instead, the ID connects to your contact info in a national pet-recovery database.

How to Microchip a Pet

Where to go: Any vet clinic, animal shelter, or rescue can implant a chip.
The process:

  • The chip is injected under the skin between the shoulder blades using a sterile syringe.
  • It’s quick — about the same as a routine vaccine.
  • Cost: Usually $25–$50 (often free at rescue clinics or events).

REGISTER A MICROCHIP

This step is crucial — an unregistered chip is almost useless!

  1. Ask your vet or rescue which chip brand was used (e.g., HomeAgain, 24PetWatch, Avid, AKC Reunite).
  2. Go to that company’s website and create an account.
  3. Enter your pet’s microchip number (found on paperwork or the vet’s invoice).
  4. Add your contact info, alternate contacts, and vet info.
  5. Keep it updated if you move or change phone numbers.

Tracking or Finding a Lost Pet

Because a microchip doesn’t transmit GPS, location tracking only happens when a lost pet is scanned:

  • Any vet, shelter, or rescue can scan for a chip.
  • The scanner displays the chip ID number.
  • Staff use a universal database (like www.petmicrochiplookup.org)

Optional: Add GPS Tracking

If you want real-time location tracking, pair the microchip with a GPS collar or tag, such as:

  • Fi Smart Collar
  • Tractive GPS
  • Whistle Go Explore
  • Apple AirTag (for short-range tracking)
